There is “I” in Intuition!

The only real valuable thing is intuition – Einstein

Have you ever had a gut feeling that you found later to be true?  Have you ever been in a situation where you trusted your inner voice made a decision against the apparent odds and were rewarded? Or have you ever not backed your hunch and regretted it? This is listening to your intuition.  What I am finding more and more is that when I listen to my intuition, my inner voice of wisdom and insight little things line up perfectly, my days flow more easily, I am more relaxed and life is much more synchronistic.

The Webster dictionary defines intuition as:

  1. The ability to understand something immediately, without the need for conscious reasoning.
  2. A thing that one knows or considers likely from instinctive feeling rather than conscious reasoning.

Almost all successful people have a very honed intuition that they listen to which enables them to make fast and effective decisions:

  • Conrad Hilton, the founder of the Hilton Hotel chain, used his intuition to decide where and when he should buy or build a hotel.
  • Thomas Edison spoke of listening to his inner voice in his search for ideas and new innovations
  • Einstein commented that a large part of his discoveries were derived from “good hunches”.
  • James Watson of DNA fame dreamt of two intertwined snakes which represented the double-helix of the DNA structure.

One of the very amazing things I find is that the more I listen to my intuition the more it seems to work.  It is a bit like flexing a muscle – it becomes stronger.

The way the mind works is that when it is relaxed and open, we access more of our unconscious mind.  Research states that when we open into our unconscious mind we are then able to tap into the quantum field and this is the place where intuition arises.  Joseph Jaworski, in his book Source, describes this in detail from a range of theoretical perspectives including quantum physics, shamanism, spirituality and cognitive science.

The HeartMath Institute has been conducting research which shows that there is a sophisticated nervous system that exists within the human heart consisting of neurocardiac cells.  This heart intelligence is fundamental to intuition (Bruce Cryer, Hearth Math Institute).  In addition, the digestive system also has an intricate system of neuronal circuitry that allows it to act independently, learn, remember and produce “gut feelings” (Gershon, 1998).

The HeartMath Institute says that “the human system is preprogrammed to operate with a high level of operational intuitive intelligence”.

So, how can we develop and utilise this ability in a more sophisticated way?  The more time we can spend in theta brain wave state (opening up the right brain) more often through your day the more we get intuitive results.  Some ways to do this are:

  • by listening to theta state music
  • day dreaming
  • take a 20 minute power nap
  • go for a walk
  • rhythmic dance
  • drumming
  • mediation
  • silence
  • mindfulness
  • spending time in nature
  • driving.

The more you trust your intuition, the more empowered you become, the stronger you become and the happier you become.  Gisele Bundchen
